A customer or buyer persona is a representation of your ideal customer based on demographics and sales you’ve had so far. They are a guide so you can better direct your marketing efforts, and decide what new products you should sell.
Ultimately, defining your customer persona will help you boost your sales, as it improves all your marketing efforts.
Did you believe you only need one buyer persona? Wrong!
Every business can have a set of various customer personas, and this depends entirely on your niche and target audience.
Let’s say you’re selling tech gadgets. You can sell these products to 40 - 60 years old people, but also to teenagers. As you can guess, your marketing efforts for each audience won’t be the same. This means you need to build two different buyer personas.
The more different people you’re trying to reach, the more buyer personas you’ll need.
Ideally, a buyer persona should be made through research and interviews with your customers, but if you don’t have that opportunity, start looking at your Google Analytics data from your past sales.
This is the key information you need:
Demographics are not everything you need. Start digging for more information about your customers. If you have social media reviews or comments from past buyers, check their profiles so you can detail their motivators:
If you have no way to get this information, you can even ask for help from your friends and family, but always keep in mind to only interview the ones that could be your target audience.
Now you have all the information, it is time to start gathering the facts and name your customer persona.
Use a common name and add a “last name” related to the target audience you’re focusing on for this particular persona. For example, “Nguyen Tech Lover”.
Remember we said you might need more than one persona? Naming them will help you to easily remember all your target audiences.
We know the theory is harder than practice, so take a look into a Chip customer persona example:
